  • Native Elderberry - Sambucus canadensis
  • Sprawling shrub that typically grows 10' tall and tends to send up suckers from the roots.
  • Elderberry erupts with large sprays of white blossom clusters in late spring and has a delicate citrusy fragrance loved by pollinators.
  • Flowers are replaced by berries that darken to a rich black-purple once they are ripe.
  • The foliage turns a lovely burnished yellow in the fall.
  • Plant in part sun or bright shade.
  • The leaves are toxic, so browsing mammals rarely bother this plant.
  • *****NOTE***** Although this plant produces edible flowers and berries, these harvests need to be cooked before being consumed.
